Manali in December: Snow, Warm Homes & the Truth About Timing
December in Manali brings clear, cold days with the best fresh-snow odds from around the 20th onward. Snow in Manali town itself is not guaranteed early month; nearby Solang and Rohtang are more reliable. Our two farmstay homes stay warm and sunlit through winter. Book early for the New Year week.
People ask us the same thing every December: will there be snow? Here is the honest answer from two families who live here year-round. Early December in Manali is usually crisp and dry, daytime skies deep blue, mornings frosty. The reliable fresh snowfall tends to arrive in the last ten days of the month, and even then it is a matter of odds, not a promise.
What is certain is the cold, the light, and how the valley looks under a low winter sun. Deodar forests hold frost till mid-morning. The Beas runs low and clear. On a good week you wake to white orchards and the sound of nothing at all.
We run two homes on opposite sides of Manali, and both are built for winter: sun-facing, properly heated, with hot food coming out of the kitchen all day. This page tells you what December actually looks like here, where the snow really falls, and how to plan so you are not disappointed.
Best snow odds after the 20th
Fresh snowfall in and around Manali is most likely in the final ten days of December. Earlier in the month it is usually clear and dry in town, though Solang and Rohtang hold snow sooner.
Warm, sun-facing homes
Both our houses are oriented to catch the winter sun and are heated properly. You get snow views from inside without the cold — thick quilts, hot water, and a kitchen running all day.
Two locations, two altitudes
Badgran (14 Mile) sits ~14km south of Manali on the highway; Shanag sits ~4-5km north toward Solang. Shanag is higher and closer to the snow line, Badgran is easier to reach in bad weather.

The 26 Dec to 2 Jan window fills first, often weeks ahead. Send us a WhatsApp early to hold your dates — we take booking requests directly, no online payment needed.
Will it snow in Manali in December?
Manali town sits at about 2,050m, and at that altitude December snow is possible but not dependable, especially in the first three weeks. What you can count on is cold, clear weather and a real chance of snow if you time your trip late. The higher you go, the surer the snow: Solang Valley (~2,560m) and the Rohtang side hold snow far earlier and longer than the town itself. If seeing snow is the whole point of your trip, plan for the last week of December and be ready to drive up to Solang if the town is still brown.
December weather, honestly
Daytime temperatures in Manali usually sit around 8-12°C in early December and drop as the month goes on. Nights fall below freezing, often -1 to -4°C, colder after fresh snow. Days are mostly sunny and dry until a western-disturbance system rolls through and brings a day or two of snow, then clears again. Roads can get slippery for a morning after snowfall; they are usually cleared quickly on the main highway. Carry warm layers, a proper jacket, and shoes with grip.
Where the snow actually falls
- Solang Valley (~2,560m): most reliable near-Manali snow, ~13km from town, the go-to for playing in fresh snow.
- Rohtang Pass side: heavy snow, but the pass itself is closed to Rohtang top in winter; Atal Tunnel access to Sissu depends on conditions.
- Old Manali and Manali town (~2,050m): scenic snow when it lands, but not every week early in the month.
- Our Shanag home (north side): higher and closer to the snow line than the valley floor, so it often catches snow when lower spots do not.
Which of our two homes suits a December trip
Persimmon Farmstead at 14 Mile, Badgran is on the Kullu-Manali highway about 14km south of Manali. It is the easier of the two to reach when the weather turns, and it stays sunlit and calm through winter, good for families and anyone who wants a quiet base with day trips into town. Persimmon Farmstead Shanag sits near Bahang, roughly 4-5km north of Manali toward Old Manali and Solang. It is higher, closer to the snow, and better placed if your days are built around Solang and the Atal Tunnel.
Food-first, because December is a stay-in month
