A Manali long weekend from Delhi or Chandigarh, done properly
From Delhi, Manali is a 12–14 hour overnight drive or bus (about 540km); from Chandigarh it's 8–9 hours (about 300km). A three-day long weekend works best as one travel night up, two full days here, and a night bus back — based somewhere quiet off the highway so the driving doesn't eat your rest.
A long weekend is enough for Manali, but only if you're honest about the drive. The mountains don't get closer because you want them to, and the stretch past Mandi still takes what it takes. We've hosted a lot of Friday-night arrivals from Delhi and Chandigarh since we opened in 2021, so this is how we'd plan the three days if they were ours.
The short version: treat the first night as travel, not holiday. Sleep on the bus or share the driving, arrive Saturday morning, and give yourself two unhurried days before a Sunday-night return. What makes or breaks it is where you base yourself. A room right on the Mall means you spend your two good days in traffic; a base a little off the highway gives them back to you.
We run two homes for exactly this reason, and both sit away from the town crush. Which one suits you depends on whether you're coming to slow down or to get an early start on Solang and Old Manali.
Chandigarh is the easy one
About 300km and 8–9 hours via Bilaspur and Mandi. Leave Chandigarh by 6am Saturday and you're having lunch with us. It's the drive we'd pick if you have the choice.
Delhi means an overnight
Roughly 540km and 12–14 hours. Volvo buses leave Delhi ISBT (Kashmere Gate/RK Ashram) around 5–6pm and reach Manali by breakfast. Sleep on the way up; don't try to drive it and then sightsee the same day.
Base off the highway
Our Badgran home sits at 14 Mile, set back from the Kullu–Manali highway; Shanag is up a quiet lane past Bahang. Both mean you wake to orchard, not horns.
Two days, not three
Realistically you get two full days on the ground. We help you spend them well rather than pretending a long weekend is a week.
Getting here: the honest timings
From Chandigarh, it's around 300km on NH205/NH3 through Bilaspur, Sundernagar and Mandi — 8 to 9 hours with a tea stop, longer on a Saturday when everyone else has the same idea. From Delhi it's roughly 540km and 12 to 14 hours; the run to Chandigarh is quick, and then the hill section from Mandi onwards sets your real pace. The Aut tunnel bypasses a lot of the old Kullu road, which helps.
If you're on a bus, HRTC and private Volvo services leave Delhi in the early evening and reach Manali around 7–9am. That timing is the whole trick of a long weekend: you lose a night of sleep, not a day of holiday. Book the semi-sleeper or Volvo, not the ordinary bus, and keep a light jacket handy — it's cold by the time you cross Mandi at dawn, whatever the season in the plains.
A 3-day shape that works
- Friday night: travel up. Overnight bus from Delhi, or a pre-dawn Saturday start by car from Chandigarh.
- Saturday: arrive, settle, eat a proper lunch, then keep it gentle — a walk in the orchard, the river, Old Manali cafés in the evening. Altitude in Manali town is about 2,050m, so ease into it.
- Sunday: your one big day. Solang Valley or the Atal Tunnel and Sissu side, or a slower day around Naggar and Jana. Back by evening for dinner.
- Sunday night or Monday dawn: return. A Sunday-night bus has you at your desk Monday; a Monday-dawn drive is calmer if you can spare the morning.
Why we'd stay off the highway
On a two-day trip, every hour in traffic is expensive. Our Badgran home is at 14 Mile, about 14km south of Manali on the Kullu–Manali highway but set back from it, so you're 25–30 minutes from the Mall yet waking to apple and persimmon trees rather than a jammed road. Shanag, near Bahang, is 4–5km north of Manali toward Old Manali and Solang — the better base if Sunday is a Solang or Atal Tunnel day, because you start above the town and skip the morning crawl through it.
What's genuinely worth your one full day
Solang Valley is 22km from Manali and best reached early before the coach crowds; in winter it's snow and sledging, in summer it's paragliding and the ropeway. The Atal Tunnel (9.02km, opened 2020) drops you into Lahaul at Sissu in under half an hour from the north side — a different, drier, higher landscape and a good half-day out. If you'd rather slow down, Naggar Castle, the Roerich estate and the drive up to Jana waterfall make an unhurried loop with far fewer people.
Eating well without leaving
We're food-first, and on a short trip that matters more than it sounds — you don't want to spend a precious evening hunting for a decent dinner. Breakfasts are unhurried and local; dinners are home-style Himachali and North Indian, cooked to order, often with produce from the orchard. Tell us you're arriving off an overnight bus and we'll have chai and something warm ready while your room settles.
Bringing the dog, and other practicalities
Both homes are pet-friendly — a lot of our long-weekenders drive up from Delhi with the dog rather than board them, and there's open ground for a run. We don't publish room prices or take online payment; a quick WhatsApp tells us your dates and which home suits you, and we confirm by return. On a long weekend, message early in the week — the good weekends fill first, especially around the snow months and the summer break.

Is a long weekend really enough time for Manali?
Yes, if you plan it as one travel night up, two full days here, and a night return — and if you base yourself away from the town traffic. You won't see everything, but two unhurried days around one good outing (Solang or the Atal Tunnel) is a proper trip, not a rushed one.
Should I drive or take the bus from Delhi?
For Delhi, we'd take the overnight Volvo — you sleep through the 12–14 hour journey and arrive fresh, and you're not tired for the mountain roads. Driving suits Chandigarh better, where it's 8–9 hours and you can leave before dawn and be here for lunch.
Which of your two homes is better for a short trip?
Shanag, near Bahang and 4–5km north of Manali, if your plan leans toward Solang or the Atal Tunnel — you start above the town. Badgran, at 14 Mile on the highway, if you want the quietest orchard base and don't mind a 25–30 minute run into Manali.
How do I book, and do you list prices?
We take bookings by WhatsApp as a request, and confirm your dates by return — there's no online payment and we don't publish room prices. For a long weekend, message us early in the week, as those dates go first.
Tell us your dates. We'll confirm, personally.
You send a request, a real host confirms it by WhatsApp — usually within a few hours.
