A monsoon offbeat stay near Manali, orchard-green and quiet

Monsoon (July-August) is Manali's quietest, greenest season, and a good time for an offbeat orchard stay if you don't mind slow roads. At Persimmon Farmstead, near Manali, the apple and persimmon trees are at their fullest, crowds thin out, and the pace suits a workation. We give honest road advice and cook warm, hearty food.

Monsoon around Manali is not the postcard-blue season, and we won't pretend it is. From early July into late August, the Kullu valley gets its real rain, the Beas runs high and brown, and the hillsides go a green you simply don't see the rest of the year. Fewer people come. For the right guest, that trade is worth it.

We run two orchard homes here: Persimmon Farmstead at 14 Mile, Badgran, on the Kullu-Manali highway about 14km south of Manali, and Persimmon Farmstead Shanag, near Bahang, roughly 4-5km north of Manali toward Old Manali and Solang. Both sit among fruit trees, and in monsoon those orchards are at their heaviest and greenest.

This page is the honest version: what monsoon here actually feels like, where the roads need care, why the food matters more when it's grey outside, and who this season genuinely suits. If that's you, we'd love to have you.

The orchard at its greenest

July-August is peak green. The apple, pear and persimmon trees are in full leaf, the grass is thick, and mornings often open with mist sitting low over the valley before it burns off. It photographs beautifully on the clear spells between showers.

Real quiet, real space

Monsoon is our lowest-crowd window. Highway traffic thins, cafes in Old Manali empty out, and both homes feel like they're yours. If you've only seen Manali in June or December, this is a different, calmer place.

Built for a workation

Rain keeps you in, and that's the point. Warm rooms, hot food arriving without you asking, an orchard to walk between calls, and the sort of unhurried days that make a week of remote work feel like a break rather than a relocation.

Food that suits the weather

We're food-first year round, and grey monsoon days are when it lands hardest. Slow-cooked local rajma, fresh rotis, hot pakoras when the rain sets in, and chai on tap. Tell us what you like and we'll cook around it.

What monsoon actually feels like here

Manali sits around 2,050m, and Badgran and Shanag are close to that. Monsoon days aren't cold, but they're cool and damp: expect roughly 15-24C, grey mornings that often clear by midday, and rain that tends to come in bursts rather than all-day downpours. Carry a light layer and something waterproof. The compensation is the light between showers, when the whole valley turns luminous and the air smells of wet pine and earth.

The honest road caution

This is the part other places skip, so we won't. Monsoon is landslide and shooting-stone season in Himachal. The Chandigarh-Manali highway can slow or briefly halt after heavy rain, particularly the stretches near Mandi and along the river. It usually clears within hours, but it can add time, so build a buffer into your travel and don't plan a tight same-day onward connection.

  • Travel by daylight where you can, and avoid driving the highway late at night in heavy rain.
  • Keep one flexible day at each end of your trip for possible delays.
  • Check road status the morning you travel; we're happy to tell you what we're hearing locally on WhatsApp.
  • For Badgran (14 Mile), you're right on the highway, which keeps access simple. For Shanag, the last approach is a smaller hill road, so tell us your vehicle and we'll advise.

Which home suits monsoon

Both work well, and it comes down to what you want from the week. Badgran, at 14 Mile on the highway, is the easier arrival and a touch more connected, handy if you're moving around or want a straightforward drive in and out. Shanag, near Bahang toward Old Manali and Solang, sits higher and quieter off the main road, which suits a settle-in-and-stay monsoon trip where you barely touch the car. If you're unsure, message us with your plans and we'll point you to the right one.

Getting out between the rain

You can still do plenty on the clear spells. Old Manali's cafes are calm and easy to reach from either home. Short orchard and riverside walks are lovely after rain. Solang, about 14km up from Manali past Shanag, is green and empty in monsoon, though the adventure activities there are weather-dependent this season. We steer guests toward gentler plans in these months and let the big high-altitude days wait for a clearer window.

Coming with a pet

We're pet-friendly, and monsoon is honestly one of the nicer times to bring a dog: cool weather, quiet grounds, and orchard to roam. Do pack a towel or two, because wet paws and wet fur come with the territory here. Let us know you're bringing a pet when you request your dates so we can set the room up sensibly.

How booking works

We take bookings by WhatsApp request, not an instant online checkout. You send us your dates, how many of you there are, which home you're leaning toward, and any pet or food notes; we confirm availability and the plan directly. It's a small, family-run setup, so you're talking to the people who'll actually host you. Founded in 2021, we've kept our rating close to 4.9/5 by keeping it personal.

Questions

Good to know

Is monsoon a bad time to visit Manali?

Not bad, just different. July-August brings rain, fewer crowds and the greenest scenery of the year, but roads can slow after heavy rain. If you want quiet, lush surroundings and a relaxed or workation-style stay, and you can keep your travel days flexible, monsoon is a genuinely good choice.

Will landslides ruin my trip?

They're a real monsoon risk on the Chandigarh-Manali highway, but full closures are usually short. The practical fix is buffer time: travel by daylight, keep a flexible day at each end, and check road status the morning you set off. We'll share what we're hearing locally so you can plan around it.

Is the stay good for remote work in monsoon?

Yes. Rainy days that keep you indoors suit focused work, and we provide warm rooms, hot food on tap and quiet orchard grounds to break up the day. Message us in advance about your connectivity needs for the specific home and dates, and we'll be straight with you about what to expect.

Can I bring my dog during monsoon?

Absolutely, we're pet-friendly and the cool, quiet monsoon months suit dogs well. Just pack towels for wet paws and let us know when you request your dates so we can prepare the room. Tell us the size and any needs and we'll advise on which home fits best.
